Learning Log 66 – Fellowship Meeting 5 #Fellowshipfive

Significant Experience: The 5th meeting of the Fellowship Group

What Happened?: Normally the whole thing discussion is private but considering I was the presenter in the Action Learning Set I’m allowed to say! The problem was my inability to pick up/continue an ongoing piece of work after I have stopped working on it. The main discussion points were around organisational issues (expected) and professional confidence (*very* unexpected)

So What?: This was really very useful as it brought forward issues about my professional confidence/trust in my abilities that I had not consciously considered before. It also led to my thinking more about the value I place on my time.

Now What?: I am going to produce some ‘golden rules‘ to how I approach non-1 sitting finish work and examine strategies to breaking down these non-small works into more finish-able chunks. By doing this it shall improve my belief in my own work, which shall improve my effectiveness for my organisation both in quality and my honest time spent on projects.

Learning Log 70 – Fellowship Meeting 6 #Fellowshipfive

Significant Experience: The 6th meet-up of the fellowship group. The meeting on 15th September was cancelled.

What Happened?:  Although conversation will remain private, this session followed a different path as we were 2 members short (although their height is inconsequential) so led by SH, we had a round-table looking at our progress (me: non), reasons (me: many) and future actions (me: last times + catch up on reflections) – we then morphed into a ‘shut up & write session’. As ever it was a relaxed and welcoming session with plenty of LOL’s and pastries…

So What?: This was perhaps the most important meeting for me since the initial meeting as I had lost my way badly with all things fellowship, and I worry that if this meeting hadn’t happened I may have just gone full ‘fuck it’ mode. It is a good group where we can share and work through worries and issues that directly and in-directly effect our fellowship approach.

Now What?: I am  re-energized in all things #fellowshipfive going to complete my actions from last time – including my ‘golden rules’ to stop me restarting work. To counter-act the lulls that seem to happen during the extended breaks we are going to try an informal ‘this week I did’/next week I shall’ approach on the whats-app group…breaking it down into small chunks 🙂

Learning Log 57: PKSB for PDR

Significant Experience: I produced my second CILIP Professional Knowledge & Skills Base (PKSB) to support my professional development review (PDR) within my host organisation with my line manager

What Happened?:To support my first PDR/appraisal in 3 years, I thought it would be useful to re-do CILIP’s PKSB that I had first done in March 2016 prior to starting the Knowledge for Healthcare Leadership Programme. Unfortunately, the professional development ‘offer’ had been pre-decided on perceived need at a departmental level, so my effort was, for this intention, was wasted.

So What?: Despite the lack of interest in my stated professional aims, I found the process of updating the PKSB to be very useful when framing what I believe to be my professional needs in terms of development. It was also very useful to compare it to March 2016 PKSB in which I had over 80 development needs!

Now What?: Moving forward I shall use the PKSB to identify development opportunities that I believe will benefit me professionally and enable me to provide the best service for my users enabling better decision making within public health commissioning.

Learning Log 53 – Fellowship Meeting 3 #Fellowshipfive

Significant Experience: The 3rd meet up on the fellowship working group the #fellowship 5 (aka rising stars)

What Happened?: Not going to discuss action learning set but following that update and new goal setting in a roundtable discussion, then a focus on a couple of individuals CV’s

So What?: This approach is really working for me. It gives me clarity in a time that my brain is scrambled trying to get everything done before I change roles. The group is well-rounded and different enough to offer a variety of perspectives and experiences that enhance all aspects of discussion from concepts of good and evil to commuting options to myers-briggs in the Star Wars Universe! But the aspect I would like to highlight is the roundtable feedback on previous goals and setting of new ones. I think this aspect of the session blossomed today, becoming a min-hot bed of fellowship innovation and best practice. I have picked up lots of different tips and approaches on what has worked (and what hasn’t) and why people have approached a problem in a certain way or the order they have been tackled. I have so many thoughts and opportunities that I want to tackle all at the same time!

Now What?: I have decided on a start point for my ‘fellowship journey’ – March 11th 2016 – Day 1 of KfH Leadership Programme, potentially finishing 6 months into my role. This is  not a complete journey but the start of this new chapter in my life. I have 4 main goals for the next meet-up (Group themes from PKSB,find & upload previous PKSB, Annotate previous JD, Update CV). When I complete these I shall have a solid framework for my Fellowship portfolio.

Learning Log 52: Fellowship Meeting 2 #Fellowshipfive

Significant Experience: The second meet-up of the #Fellowshipfive with the first action learning sets involved and future actions set.

What Happened?:It was the second meet-up of the #fellowship (Jo, Julie, Sarah, Tracey, and I) facilitated by Yvette. Day is standard – reporting back on how we have gotten on with our actions, our ALS pitches and how we are feeling in regards to fellowship progression and life is generally! Then onto Action-Learning Sets (of which participant roles and discussion shall forever remain confidential) which took on quite traditional format and were effective. The morning session was wrapped up with individual led goal setting. In the afternoon was then a ‘shut up and write session’ – which I did not attend.

So What?: The effectiveness of these go beyond the intended fellowship development scope. It roots me in a ‘library world’ that I am away from in my role and as well as bringing a co-operative/competitive edge to the process of fellowship that spurs me on – the ALS help reflect a light back on myself at issues  – even if I am not a presenter – I may face currently or have faced in the past (and how they were resolved), and allow me to feel connected to the ‘library-hive-mind’ that I may on occasion feel distant from professionally. Action Learning has helped me develop as the person within the professional exceptionally over the last twelve months which has allowed me to more honestly reflect on issues I am facing – meaning better solutions and improved emotional health.

Now What?: There are no direct reflections to take from this beyond I am committed to this process and am very lucky to be with such an excellent group. By the next meeting on April 25th I shall have completed my first draft of my CV.

Learning Log 51- Fellowship Meeting #Fellowshipfive

Significant Experience: The first meet up of #fellowshipfive

What Happened?: This was the first real step of my Fellowship journey. Drunken conversations, half promises etc. have been put aside and I have joined a colloborative group to help us all complete Fellowship. Other members are Tracey Pratchett (other half of drunken conversation), Julie Griffths, Jo Alcock, and Sarah Hennessy. The group is being mentored/facilitated by Yvette Jeal. The day was about introductions, the agreed approach – an action learning focus with ‘shut up and write sessions’ where we are up to in the process/timescales, what we can expect from each other, our reasons and drive to fellow, etc. Also loads of running chat!

So What?: This is a really important step. On good days, I believe I am at fellowship level and this approach will help me focus on less good days! I am very excited to be part of this and enable the other members to develop whist developing myself.

Now What?: next meeting – 29th March 2017.
